The Bulgari recently announced that they are planning a series of Italian regional wine tasting sessions with their Head Sommelier Sam Heathcote.
The classes, which will be running throughout the year, are designed for groups of up to eight people and will focus on the wine from five specific regions, exploring the characteristics of the region’s native and non-native wine varieties.
A tasting chart has been specially developed by Sam Heathcote, explaining in detail how to approach a wine, what to look for and how to identify different tastes on the palette — including how to identify sweet, salt, sour and bitter flavours. Guiding the group through a range of white and red wines, Sam then helps to pull these flavours from people’s palettes, imploring them to be confident enough to apply what they have learnt.
Piccoli morsi (‘little bites’) accompany the wine, designed by Il Ristorante’s Head Chef, Robbie Pepin. The group is then shown how the balance and characteristics of wine can play an important role in the relationship with food.
If you are looking for a good introduction to wine tasting by a well-respected sommelier, or have a particular interest in regional Italian wine, then these classes are definitely for you. At the very least, they will get you thinking with your palette.

02 May 2013 – Piemonte
20 June 2013 – Friuli-Venezia Giulia
12 September 2013 – Toscana
7 November 2013 – Sicilia
11 December 2013 – Veneto
Priced at £70 per person, the classes are specifically designed to be suitable for guests with little or no knowledge of wine, to those with more knowledge.
