Fashion and cake are rarely mentioned in the same sentence, the latter hardly being an established path to achieving the coveted size zero. They are from such different worlds that you would never expect to find them sharing the same catwalk. Yet that is exactly what the Berkeley hotel has set out to do with their Prêt-à-Portea delicacies with a fashionista twist.

The Spring / Summer 2013 collection interprets this year’s latest catwalk designs and transforms them into abstract homages to designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Tony Burch, Alexander McQueen, Jason Wu and Prada. These delectable pastries are served on bespoke made Wedgewood fine-bone china and accompanied by your choice of loose-leaf afternoon tea.

There is a good selection of loose-leaf teas to choose from including English breakfast, Earl Grey, Ceylon, Lapsang Souchong, Organic Assam, Vanilla, Pear Caramel, White Peoney and a range of herbal infusions. This really is afternoon tea with a twist and, for us, there are some designs that really stand out.

This season’s Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley includes Jason Wu’s coconut “Carolyn” hatbox shaped cake bag sandwiched in leopard print chocolate and Prada’s Geisha-like white chocolate and Grand Marnier oversized coat decorated with red poppies. A Sicilian chic pistachio green and vanilla striped pannacota dress gives a nod to Dolce & Gabanna, whilst Manolo Blahnik’s latest shoe designs are sweetly reduced to a slingback chocolate biscuit heel with baby blue icing topped with timeless pearls.

Tony Burch’s interpretation is perhaps the most playful, presented as a glamorous violet halterneck biscuit bikini with magenta icing. Oscar de la Renta’s delicacy also takes a light-hearted approach, with high-waisted peach-pink bavarois shorts embellished with strawberry compote rosettes.

With so much to choose from, it’s hard to pick a favourite, but our vote has to go to Alexander McQueen’s whimsical honeycomb cream oversized dress topped with a marzipan bee. This is sure to cause a buzz at The Berkeley this summer.
